COLOR, RITMO & GENTE.
Sonidero culture goes beyond enjoying music in a public space. It is a lifestyle, a community, and it is present in a variety of forms. Transnational communication is achieved through messages and recordings. An independent and autonomous communication network is thus created.
Three out of the four years that I have been living in Mexico City, I have worked with Sonideros, documenting several events and understanding their culture. I have collaborated for El Proyecto Sonidero, a independently coordinated project by researchers Mariana Delgado and Marco Ramirez, who have tried to give back the light to this enormous movement shadowed and marginalized by the government and society . Thoughout this process we have established a relationship of trust and reciprocity with a few members of the community. They have led us, with much pride, through this gigantic and diverse world.
This documentary essay shows portraits of the fans, dancers and participants of sonidero parties and events in México City. In the markets of La Merced and Tepito, the streets of Peñon de los Barrios, dancing saloons and personal celebrations. Where there is a celebration, there’s got to be a Sonidero, lighting up the scene with their sound system and lighting equipment.
In January 2012, the e-book Sonideros en las aceras, véngase la gozadera was presented in the Centro Cultural de España, in México City, where these images, along with many others, are present. The e-book Sonideros en las aceras, véngase la gozadera was created thanks to a grant awarded to El Proyecto Sonidero from the Bancomer Foundation in 2010.
